Warm-up

In this lesson, your tutor will help you go over this topic: VacationFirst, go over the following vocabulary and expressions with your tutor. Read the word/expression and definition out loud, and your tutor will go over anything you do not understand. Practice creating a sentence or two to make sure you know how to use the word/expression properly.

Vocabulary/ Expressions

Leave for vacation Go on a trip for leisure and relaxation
e.g. My boss is out of office for vacation.
Return from vacation Come back home after a vacation
e.g. I was very sad to return from vacation.
Backpacking Travel with all personal items in a backpack.
e.g. We went on a backpacking outing.
Couch surfing Sleeping on the couches of local residents while traveling (as opposed to staying in hostels or hotels)
Airbnb Company that allows you to book rooms in other people’s houses
Souvenir A keepsake from your travels
e.g. My mom always buys teaspoons as souvenirs.
Long weekend An extended weekend, usually 3-4 days long
e.g. My family is not going anywhere for the long weekend this time.
Book a hotel Reserve a room in a hotel for your travel
e.g. I did not book a room until the weekend before the trip.
Family outing a brief trip that people take for fun usually as a group
e.g. We went on a backpacking outing.
Getaway a short vacation
e.g. We’re planning a weekend getaway to the mountains.

Conversation

Use the following questions as a guideline to form an interesting conversation with your tutor. Feel free to diverge from these suggestions if anything interesting comes up.

  1. Describe your last vacation.
  2. How do you feel after a long vacation?
  3. Did you spend a lot of money on your last vacation? How much did you spend on which items?
  4. Did you encounter any problems during your vacation? If you did, describe them.
  5. What was the food like?
  6. Why did you decide to visit that place?
  7. What kind of accommodation do you prefer, and why?
  8. Where was the most exotic place you ever visited? Describe your experience.
  9. What was the most interesting thing you did during the holiday?
  10. Do you usually buy souvenirs when going on vacations? If you do, what kind of souvenirs do you like most? If you don’t, why not?

Wrap-up

Go over any new expressions or vocabulary that you learned today.
