Teamwork or Work Independently?

After a quick greeting, use the following questions as a guideline to form an interesting conversation with your tutor. Feel free to diverge from these suggestions if anything interesting comes up.

  • Is it more important to be able to work with a group of people on a team or to work independently? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.
    • What are the benefits of working as a group?
    • What are the benefits of working independently?
    • In which setting do you feel most comfortable?

Vocabulary

Skip this section if you have 15 minute plan. Read the word/expression and definition out loud, and your tutor will go over anything you do not understand. Practice creating a sentence or two to make sure you know how to use the word/expression properly.

Vocabulary/ Expressions

Expression Definition
teamwork (n) combined action of a group
The teacher encouraged teamwork in completing the projects.
efficiency (n) the state or quality of getting things done in a reasonable time
They were always concerned with efficiency and being able to get the work done on time. 
independent (adj) not dependent on outside authority
She always could work better when she was independent.
collective (adj) done by acting as a group
She found the collective work of a group task to be very rewarding.
function (v) work or operate in a particular way
He couldn’t function well when others were yelling at him with different ideas.
contribute (v) give something in order to achieve a goal
She was always willing to contribute to the discussion.
put off (expression) wait to do something until later
He always put off his work until the very last minute.
put up with (expression) tolerate
She found it difficult to put up with team members who didn’t want to do the work. 
chip in (expression) help
When you work alone, you’re the only one who has to chip in and do the work. 
pitch in (expression) contribute to a group setting
In a group setting, it’s important to pitch in and share the work with others.
