Dorothy:
Kevin! I’m so excited because I will be traveling to Miami next month! This will be my first time flying.

Wow! Did you buy your ticket yet?
Dorothy:
Yes! Can you let me know what to expect when I check-in at the airport?
Kevin:
I suggest you arrive at the airport 2 hours prior to your departure time.
Dorothy:
Ok! What should I expect at the ticket counter?
Kevin:
They will ask you for your ID and tell you the approximate arrival time.
Dorothy:
What about my carry-on?
Kevin:
I recommend that you put a suitcase tag on all your baggage. Also, they might check the size and weight.
Dorothy:
Thanks! Will they give me my boarding pass at this time also?

Yes, they will. They will also tell you which gate the plane will depart from. Have a safe trip!

Dorothy and Kevin are talking about what it’s like to live in another country.

Dorothy:
Kevin, do you like living abroad in Tokyo?
Kevin:
I love it, but it took me several months to adjust. to living here
Dorothy:
I can imagine! What was the most difficult thing for you?
Kevin:
Culture shock was the most difficult for me.
Dorothy:
I’m sure it took a while to get used to Tokyo. What do you think about the food?
Kevin:
I love Japanese cuisine. It’s delicious!
Dorothy:
I love Japanese food also. How is the cost of living?
Kevin:
The cost of living is similar to San Francisco.
Dorothy:
I see. Are the people friendly and kind?
Kevin:
The people are friendly. However, I can’t speak their language well so I struggle to meet new friends.

VOCABULARY

culture shock (n) a feeling of confusion felt by someone living in another country or place they don’t know

used to (adj) to become familiar with something so it seems normal
She’s not used to driving the car.
cuisine (n) food cooked in a certain way, especially of a specific country
We spent the day tasting the local cuisine of Japan.
cost of living (n) the average price of food, clothing, and other services to live somewhere
The cost of living in London is high.
similar (adj) almost the same as someone or something else
The two houses are similar.
however (adv) to introduce a statement that is different than something said before
She needs to study. However, she doesn’t have enough time.
struggle (v) to try hard to do something that is difficult or causes problems
He struggles with learning English.
